As we all try to get accustomed to the "new normal" of life on this planet with the coronavirus (COVID-19), there are some important lessons that remain tried and true, despite the changing times. What we say, how we say it, when we say it, the tone we use, the visual expressions we give those words, the energy behind our words...all of it, MATTERS! I know that we often give lip service to that idea but today, more than ever, we need to be careful with our words - not just when we talk to our friends and family but with...everyone we talk to about this virus.
As the World Health Organization (WHO) has said "An “infodemic” of misinformation and rumours is spreading more quickly than the current outbreak of the new coronavirus (COVID-19)". And it led some of WHO's leaders to devote precious resources to providing public admonishment about the spread of stigma associated with how we talk about this issue.
This is important! Take a moment to read their guide to talking about this virus WITHOUT exacerbating the level of stigma around this issue: https://www.who.int/docs/default-source/coronaviruse/covid19-stigma-guide.pdf Because our words, especially in times like this, really do matter!
