Social Math

When folks in San Diego think about 6 feet of social distance to stop the spread of COVID, they know that’s the length of a surfboard. When a hurricane hits, we often describe how many people are affected by talking about the number of football stadiums they would fill. Social math is an important tool for helping people understand big or complicated issues by relating them to things we experience every day. Leaders who are skilled at social math can help people more easily connect to issues or solutions they might not otherwise be able to wrap their brains around.
